The baby basket

3 October 2024

At Valdecasas&Cols we promote mother-child contact from the moment of birth. In order to offer your baby the appropriate care from birth, we offer you a series of recommendations that you can follow and which we detail below.

Dress the baby in cotton, batiste or pearl clothing to avoid any allergic response, since the baby's skin is very delicate. That is why the following should be removed from the wardrobe:

  • Angora wool (the baby could inhale the hairs that the wool gives off)
  • Thick clothing and wool
  • All bows that can be wrapped around the baby's neck
  • Mittens

It is necessary that all clothing be washed with a neutral soap before wearing it for the first time and that the labels be cut off.

So that your baby dresses each day as you wish, we recommend that you group the baby's clothing outfits to your liking and place them in separate bags, one for each day.

The bag should include:

  • A cotton T-shirt and romper or bodysuit
  • An outer outfit of your choice:
    • A pair of pajamas
    • A jumper, a romper and socks
    • A jumper and trousers

You should prepare the number of outfits based on the mother's expected stay at the centre (between 2 and 3 days in the case of a normal birth, and 4 or 5 days in the case of a caesarean section). We advise you to increase the number of loose items in case the baby gets dirty. You should add to the basket:

  • A swaddle and a cap, which will be used to wrap the baby at the time of birth to prevent loss of body heat
  • A towel or blanket to wrap the baby
  • A pacifier
  • Bibs

Wet baby wipes and nappies will be provided at the Teknon Medical Centre itself. During your stay we will instruct you on the care and hygiene of your baby's skin; For this reason, it would be a good idea to include a moisturizing cream for the skin, a cream for the diaper area, a cologne and a hairbrush in the basket. In this way, using their products, any type of allergy can be detected in advance.

Likewise, the mother should bring a series of products, such as:

  • Four nightgowns
  • Two bras
  • A robe
  • 6 cotton or disposable panties (at least)
  • Closed slippers
  • Personal toiletry bag for daily hygiene

If she wants to breastfeed, she should include in her bag:

  • Nursing pads
  • Nipple shields (if she considers it convenient)
  • An electric mat in case she has chest discomfort and needs local heat
